  • The MFA Board of Directors is continuing it’s research and review of a winter drawdown as a means of controlling Eurasian Water-Milfoil (EWM). It has NOT taken a position in favor of, or against, the use of such a tool. However, it is incumbent upon the Board to do all of the preliminary research. A great deal of information is yet to be gathered before the Board is ready and willing to make it’s recommendation. As it stands today, there are only two viable tools to control EWM: Herbicides or a 5-foot winter lake-level drawdown. The DNR has repeatedly stated it will not support the use of herbicides for expansive EWM control. Therefore, as it stands today, we have two options: 1. Let EWM expand as nature allows 2. Control it with a winter drawdown every few years. In the MFA’s 2015 survey of property owners on the Minong Flowage, Cranberry Flowage & Cranberry Lake, we asked “Would you like to see a periodic winter drawdown used in the future for EWM control”? 50% said Yes, 24% said No, and 26% said Not Sure. Once again, we seek your opinion, knowing that you would need a great deal more information before forming a definitive position. Would you accept, with appropriate planning, the use of a periodic winter drawdown as a means of controlling EWM (Eurasian Water-Milfoil)?
